Slack Setup Guide

Setting up the RunWhen Slack integration involves three parts: installing the RunWhen app into your Slack workspace, connecting it to a RunWhen workspace, and configuring the default workspace and AI Assistant in Slack.

Part 1: Install the RunWhen App in Slack

This part starts in the RunWhen Platform UI and concludes in the Slack authorization flow.

  1. Open your RunWhen workspace and navigate to Configuration (gear icon in the left sidebar)
  2. Find the Slack Integration card and click Connect
  1. You are redirected to the Slack authorization screen. Review the permissions requested and select the Slack workspace where you want to install the app
  1. Click Allow to authorize the RunWhen app in your Slack workspace
  1. After authorization, you land in the RunWhen Slack app within your Slack workspace

Part 1 is complete. The RunWhen app is now installed in your Slack workspace.

Part 2: Connect the Slack App to a RunWhen Workspace

This part starts in Slack and concludes in the RunWhen Platform UI. It links the installed Slack app to a specific RunWhen workspace so the AI Assistant knows where to search for issues and tasks.

  1. Open a direct message with the RunWhen app in Slack
  2. Type the slash command: /runwhen settings
  1. The app responds with a settings message. Click the Connect to Workspace link — this opens the RunWhen Platform UI in your browser
  2. Log in to RunWhen if you are not already authenticated
  3. Select the RunWhen workspace you want to connect from the workspace list
  1. The RunWhen Platform processes the connection. After a few seconds, the Configuration page opens with the Slack Integration dialog showing your connected Slack workspace
  1. Refresh the Configuration page to confirm the Slack Integration card now shows 1 Connected

The Slack app is now connected to your RunWhen workspace. If this is your only workspace, chats should work immediately.

Part 3: Configure Workspace and Assistant in Slack

Finalize the setup by explicitly selecting a workspace and AI Assistant in Slack. This is especially important if your Slack workspace is connected to multiple RunWhen workspaces.

  1. In Slack, run the slash command: /runwhen settings
  1. Select a workspace — Choose whether the workspace applies globally (for all users in the Slack workspace) or just for you:
    • Global — All users default to this workspace unless they set a personal override
    • Personal — Only your messages route to this workspace

Connecting a specific channel: To link a channel to a RunWhen workspace, you must run /runwhen settings from within that channel. The command associates the channel it is executed in — you cannot configure a different channel remotely.

  1. Select an AI Assistant — From the assistant list, select Super Slacker (recommended for Slack conversations). While other assistants work, Super Slacker is optimized for the Slack message format.
  1. You should now be able to chat with the RunWhen AI Assistant by DMing the app or @mentioning it in a channel

Verifying the Setup

After completing all three parts, verify the integration is working:

  1. DM test — Send a direct message to the RunWhen app: “What issues are currently open?” The Assistant should respond with findings from your connected workspace.
  2. Channel test — In a channel where the RunWhen app is present, @mention the app with a question. The Assistant should respond in a thread.
  3. Settings check — Run /runwhen settings and confirm the correct workspace and assistant are selected.

Disconnecting the Integration

To remove the Slack integration:

  1. Remove the app from Slack — In Slack, go to your workspace settings and remove the RunWhen app
  2. Disconnect from RunWhen — In the RunWhen Platform UI:
    • Navigate to Configuration
    • Click Manage under the Slack Integration card
    • Click Disconnect
    • Wait for the confirmation message (this may take a moment)

After disconnecting, refresh the Configuration page to confirm the “Connected” status is removed.
